Objectives:
The goals of the workshop are to:
Increase the understanding of the context and overall tenets of working with tribes – unique considerations, such as tribal sovereignty, cultural beliefs and traditions, and historical trauma, that all should be aware of in seeking engagement with tribal people, communities and organizations;
Comprehend how to respectfully and successfully engage with American Indians, Alaska Natives and other Indigenous peoples – thoughtful, respectful, bi-directional engagement;
Recognize that building trusting, reciprocal, and long-lasting relationships with the Native communities in their respective regions are vital to the success of federal and non-federal agencies and organizations;
Understand how collaboration and authentic engagement with tribal communities can become a best practice; and
Gain an understanding of how investing in early and meaningful relationship building and engagement with AIANI will increase the government’s effectiveness.
